Assistive Technology Ionia ISD

Ionia ISD Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Services
Ionia ISD provides Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services to support students, families, local school districts, educators, and educational teams in ensuring equitable access to learning, communication, participation, and the curriculum for all students.
Services include an AT Lending Library of devices to support student evaluations and trials; consultation and collaboration with local district teams; support for the implementation of the SETT Framework to guide individualized AT decision-making; professional development and training to build staff capacity; and ongoing support for the effective implementation and use of AT and AAC tools. Ionia ISD also promotes collaboration and access to local, regional, statewide, and national assistive technology resources to strengthen educational outcomes and student independence.
What is Assistive Technology
The following definition of assistive technology (AT) comes from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA2004), Section 300.5:
“The term ‘assistive technology device’ means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted or the replacement of such device.”
Ionia ISD Assistive Technology (AT) and AAC Services
The goal of Ionia ISD’s Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services is to build the capacity of local district teams to identify, evaluate, implement, and monitor assistive technology that supports student access to communication, learning, and the curriculum.
Ionia ISD AT/AAC services provide consultation, information, technical assistance, professional development, and modeling of best practices to support consistent, data-informed decision-making. Local district teams may request assistance when considering AT/AAC for an individual student, exploring potential tools and strategies, implementing recommendations, or seeking staff training.
Through the use of the SETT Framework, collaborative problem-solving, the AT Lending Library, and ongoing implementation support, Ionia ISD works to strengthen district capacity, promote effective use of assistive technology, and support meaningful student participation and independence.

Ionia ISD Assistive Technology Lending Library
The Ionia ISD Assistive Technology (AT) Lending Library provides local school district teams with access to assistive technology devices, software, communication tools, and assessment resources for student trials and evaluation purposes.
The Lending Library supports the SETT Framework and data-informed assistive technology decision-making by allowing teams to explore and trial tools that address individual student needs before making recommendations or purchasing equipment.
Ionia ISD staff and designated local district personnel may request and borrow available equipment through the established checkout process. The Lending Library also supports the effective implementation of assistive technology through consultation, training, and guidance on appropriate use, documentation, and follow-up.
Through centralized inventory management, equipment tracking, and consistent lending procedures, Ionia ISD aims to promote responsible use of resources, strengthen local district capacity, and support equitable access to assistive technology for students.
